The big reveal

Last post for the big desk refinishing project. I finished the painting last Tuesday a coat of primer and two coats of white glossy spray paint on Monday and Tuesday. I had the husband take the top off once we found that it was screwed to the base with brackets. This made it easier to paint without having to tape and drape the bottom and to get the monster back into the house.

During the week I made the decision to toss the original handles. They were wood and after all the varnish and stain was removed the wood was so badly cracked they couldn't be saved. I took a cue from the new lamp which looks tiny on this monster sized desk but it isn't. I had it on an end table and it took up the whole thing. Anyway the lamp is teal with a cream colored rectangular shade and black accents. The desk is more of a sea green blue color the can said exotic sea gloss but I think the black hardware works. The damaged spot didn't turn out well. It still looks damaged so I had the husband turn the desk top around and put that in the back so I could hide it. All in all I think it turned out pretty good. It takes up a lot of room. But after looking at the options at Staples you know those laminated things that comes in a box, yeah, no I'm glad I bought this and put the work into it.

So costs break down like this: Desk was with tax $26. Six cans of spray paint with tax $30. The long handles were $14 with tax and the two small pulls were $6 with tax. Total for the desk itself with taxes is $76. Mostly real wood old teachers desk with so much space for losing er storing things inside.

I looked everywhere for a consignment or resale desk chair. The only ones I found that would work had too much damage to the upholstery and I can't fix that. So I bought a brand new desk chair from Staples. I spent more than I wanted to but I got it for $99.99 off from $179.99. I'm not really crazy about it right now but it's better than what I had. It's just different from what I'm used to.

So the AFTER PICS follow.

Let me know what you think.

starting with the before painting of the desk top. Note the wood putty that I sanded smooth.

and there it is. the finished project. It shows a little more blue in the pic than in reality, it's more of an aqua marine color.
there were only four long handles available so I bought two matching knobs think I could hand things from them later. This is the cabinet so it only needs the one handle. I didn't want to go fill in the holes and repaint.

this is a pull out shelf. which as it turns out is better for typing on.
this drawer is what sold this desk to me. little slots for putting things that tend to go roaming around.

that's a full size lap top not a mini

the flamingo or as I call it the pink chicken is a cookie jar that I bought years ago. I love flamingos. This is my only one. The conch shell I picked up in the Bahamas in 1987 during senior trip. I've hauled that thing around for 25 years. The necklace around the lamp is one my daughter gave me for my birthday it's a little bottle with blue sand inside and my name written on a scroll of paper.
and there you have it. I'm sort of a coastal cottage type person. The hearts were for each of my kids. I haven't found one like it for number four. still looking.

And for my next project which will be much much smaller. I found an old wood child size rocker this week. It's in great shape. Solid. But someone painted over the original paint and didn't do a very good job. I'm going to sand it down and paint it for Aubrey. Hmmm should I post the pics? Was this something that y'all enjoyed? This little peek inside my life and the things I do to not go completely bonkers.
