The Great Desk refinishing project of the year part two

Rain is not conducive to outdoor painting projects. We had three weeks of beautiful weather right up until I started this project. See last Sunday's post for part one HERE. It rained all week except Friday and today (Sunday). Friday I finished up some of the sanding that didn't get done over the weekend. The spot I filled with wood putty in particular. Which turned out okay. Not great but okay. And then I put on a coat of primer. And then the kids decided they wanted to paint and took the roller from me. And then they both decided that I'd somehow tricked them into doing my work and that they'd rather do something else and wouldn't listen when I reminded them they were the ones who wanted to paint. Nobody volunteers for work. First set of pics are from Friday.

Amazing how we managed one day of sun all week long. But so far so good. I did the top coat on the cabinet door and the drawers on Friday too, forgot to take pics. They're white like this. Boring. Unfortunately the wooden handles aren't going to work, most of them are cracked under the old varnish and they just look bad. So I'm going to look for new drawer pulls. I'm also thinking that the finished project is going to be too bright and shiny. I'm wondering if I should do a dark glaze to tame down all the shiny. I don't want to "antique" this project. As in beat it with chains and hammers and rough up the final paint job to make it look old. I'm just thinking a final coat of a coffee colored glaze might just be perfect. Will give it some thought. Okay next set of pics. The base of the desk is finished. I haven't done the top yet since it's been upside down all this time. That's for the next and final post. But for now here's the color shot.

And what exactly was my family doing while I was inhaling spray paint? Oh, off having fun without me. It was gorgeous today. Mid seventies and windy a perfect day for kite flying.

That's my hand. I'm still trying to get the paint off. I have no idea how I got that much on me. I was careful.
Final project coming soon. Tuesday, if the weather holds.

  1. We are having the same kind of weather today. Now I feel like flying a kite. Haven't done that in years. :)

The desk is looking good. Can't wait to see the finished product. Maybe it will inspire me to start a project. :D
